Ever tried on a cowboy hat and thought, “Yeah, nah. I haven’t got the head for that”?
You’re not alone. Plenty of people love the idea of wearing a cowboy hat, right up until they put one on and feel like they’ve accidentally wandered onto the set of Toy Story.
But here’s the thing. There’s a cowboy hat for just about every head. You just need someone who knows how to shape it.
And that’s where Bar M Custom Tack comes in.
One Size Does Not Fit All. Neither Does One Shape.
You wouldn’t expect the same haircut to suit every person who walks into a hair salon, would you?
Cowboy hats are no different.
The height of the crown, the width of the brim, the angle of the crease, even the way the brim curves around your face can completely change how a hat looks on you.
A hat that looks fantastic on your mate might make you look like you’ve borrowed your grandfather’s Sunday best.
That’s why at Bar M Custom Tack, we don’t believe in pulling a hat off the shelf and hoping for the best.
We believe in finding the shape that actually suits YOU.
Meet the Award-Winning Woman Behind Bar M
Based in Gibbston Valley, near Queenstown, Bar M Custom Tack is the creation of Millie Aitken, winner of the 2026 Rural NZ Young Business Woman of the Year award.
And she’s not exactly new to the cowboy world.
Raised in the New Zealand high country, Millie’s background stretches from farming, fencing and rodeo to cowboying on Canada’s biggest ranch at 1 million acres - The Gang Ranch.
She’s spent plenty of time around the real deal. Long days in the saddle, early mornings, hard work and the kind of cowboy culture where a hat isn’t just something you put on for a photo.
It’s part of everyday life.
So when Millie talks about cowboy hats, she’s not just following the latest Western fashion trend. She knows what a proper cowboy hat should look like, how it should fit and what it needs to stand up to.
It’s that combination of genuine cowboy experience, an eye for detail and a love of traditional craftsmanship that sits behind Bar M.
Built on Grit and Grace. And a fair bit of dirt under the fingernails.
Not All Cowboy Hats Are Created Equal.
Bar M specialises in premium, individually fitted and hand-shaped cowboy hats, including high-quality American-made fur felt hats with genuine beaver fur content.
In fact, Bar M offers something particularly special for New Zealand hat lovers: being the only hat business in NZ witha range of custom cowboy hats made with beaver fur felt, from beaver blends right through to luxurious 100% beaver felt.
Why beaver?
Because when it comes to traditional cowboy hat making, beaver fur is considered the gold standard.
It’s prized for its durability, water resistance, beautiful finish and ability to hold its shape. A quality beaver felt hat is an investment designed to be worn, cared for and enjoyed for years.
And the best part? Your hat is shaped for you.
Not for the mannequin it was sitting on. Not for the bloke in the catalogue. You.
Whether you’re after a traditional cattleman crease, a punchy Western look, a wide-brimmed statement hat or something a little more understated, Millie works with you to create a shape that suits your face, your style and your lifestyle.
A Proper Cowboy Hat Should Feel Like It Belongs on Your Head.
Ever had a hat that squeezes your forehead but feels loose around the sides?
That’s because head shape matters just as much as head size.
Some heads are round. Some are long oval. And some seem determined to be a shape all of their own.
At Bar M, fitting goes beyond measuring the circumference of your head.
Millie considers the actual shape of your head, how the hat sits and how the crown and brim complement your features.
Because a beautiful hat that gives you a headache after twenty minutes isn’t much use to anyone.
And there’s a big difference between wearing a cowboy hat and wearing a cowboy hat that looks like it was made for you.
Want to Get Your Hands on a Hat? Or Make a Day of It?
Bar M isn’t just about buying a hat.
At the Gibbston Valley workshop, you can book a private hat-shaping experience and get involved in creating something that’s entirely your own.
From choosing your hat to shaping, styling and adding the finishing touches, these sessions are a chance to see the craft up close and walk away with a hat that tells your story.
Bar M also offers group hat workshops, private events, hens’ parties, wedding experiences and mobile hat bars.
Whether it’s a few friends getting together for something different, a bride wanting a memorable experience for her guests, or a group looking for a proper hands-on Western experience, Bar M can help bring it to life.
And you don’t need to know a thing about cowboy hats before you arrive.
That’s what Millie’s there for.
