Rare Breeds Display

Rare Horse Society of NZ

Equifest 2025 will showcase some of New Zealand’s most unique and endangered horse breeds, thanks to the Rare Horse Society of New Zealand. This passionate group was founded by two members of the Rare Breeds Conservation Society of NZ, who shared a dream of focusing exclusively on horses. Their vision has since grown into a thriving network of dedicated people united by their love for rare and heritage equines.

The Society’s mission is clear: to promote and preserve rare pure horse breeds living in Aotearoa. By educating the public about these breeds and the challenges they face, the group hopes to spark awareness and inspire action. They also work to connect prospective owners with breeders, creating sustainable demand and helping ensure the survival of these remarkable horses.

Beyond education, the Rare Horse Society also challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about lesser-known breeds. They actively create opportunities for the public to see, learn about, and interact with rare horses at events around the country. In 2023, the Society’s debut event in Mosgiel set a world record for the widest range of rare horses on display at one event.

At Equifest 2025, visitors can look forward to meeting a stunning line-up of horses, from towering heavy breeds to charming ponies. Confirmed breeds include the Cleveland Bay, Clydesdale, Shire, Gypsy Cob, Exmoor Pony, Dartmoor Pony, Fjord Horse, Friesian, Kaimanawa, PRE, Drum Horse, and Paso Fino. Among them will be one of the only Exmoor Ponies in the country – a truly rare opportunity for equine enthusiasts.

The Rare Horse Society is also opening paid memberships in September 2025, inviting the public to get involved and support their mission. To learn more, visit https://rarehorsesocietynz.org/
