Nikita Stowers

Discipline: Equine Nutrition

Nikita has always been an animal lover and grew up with horses, riding from a young age. She followed this passion when she went to Massey University in Palmerston North in 2003 and was fortunate enough to take her horse with her.

She began studying Animal Science and quickly realised that Equine Nutrition was an area that she had a huge passion for and followed this through her undergraduate and post-graduate study and research. Her research interests include the growing and breeding horse, gastrointestinal health, mineral nutrition and performance horse nutrition. In 2016, after working as a Nutritionist for various feed companies for some time, she decided to follow her dreams with Veterinarian Dr. Petra Hazlitt, and start New Zealand's first independent Equine integrated Veterinary and Nutrition Consultancy - Veterinary and Nutritional Integration LTD (VANI).

She loves being able to help horse owners all over New Zealand with their horses diets and provide advice backed up by Science, knowledge and experience. With a wealth of feeds and supplements on the market, Nikita loves being able to take the guesswork out of feeding for horse owners. No client is too big or too small, Nikita has clients that have one miniature horse right through to Stud farm owners with hundreds of horses.

Key learnings to take away from Nikita's sessions:

Nikita's first talk will cover the Equine Gut. The horses gut is the foundation of why and how we feed our horses and so Nikita will cover how you can feed your horse to optimise their gut health and get the most from your feeds and your horse. She will also cover some common things that go wrong with feeding and the impacts these can have on your horse as well as how to correct this.

Nikita's second talk will cover the importance of balance in your horses diet, how to ensure your diet is balanced and up to date research and knowledge on mineral nutrition and testing. Nikita has extensive experience and expertise in the field of Selenium for horses and you might be surprised to find that your horse is no longer deficient in Selenium and could even have toxic amounts in their blood.

Nikita's third talk will focus on the practicalities of feeding horses, what to look for when selecting your feeds and how to read a feed bag and know if it's right for your horse. Nikita encourages the public that are attending this talk to come with questions specific to their situation and even bring a feed bag along so we can go through real examples as a group.
