Ben Longwell, who grew up working with horses and cattle in Colorado, operates True West Horsemanship Ltd based in the South Island of New Zealand.
After finishing school, he spent much of his time doing day work for different ranches & outfits in the area, learning from the skills and experience of the ranchers. He also spent a year working as assistant trainer at a Quarter Horse breeder in Colorado learning the basics of colt starting and true horsemanship.
In 2011 – Ben and his wife Natalie moved to her native country of New Zealand and took the opportunity to build a horse training and clinic business.
True West Horsemanship provides natural trust based horsemanship training in the style of the traditional vaquero bridle horse. This includes colt starting, re-starting horses, stockhorse development, problem solving, foal handling, halter training – establishing solid horsemanship foundations for any breed or equine discipline.
Ben's teaching suits a variety of skills and interests. His natural trust based horsemanship training helps prepare every horse they work with to have a solid foundation no matter what equine discipline you are involved in. The reality of making a living horseback in rough country as a working cowboy and the ability to do it safely is part of what sets Ben apart here in New Zealand.
A big part of working in harmony with horses involves understanding their perspective and how it differs to our own. Recognizing their need for safety and comfort, which is naturally found in the herd dynamics, Ben focuses on meeting those needs by providing leadership and communication in a way that a horse naturally understands. Tapping into the natural body language horses use as communication, paired with proper timing, can quickly build confidence in a horse to become responsive and willing.
